Beginner

- Low functional ability; difficulty with pronunciation
A2
High Beginner
- Can understand sentences and expressions
- Can communicate routine task, background or immediate environment in short messages
- Lacks vocabulary and grammar to communicate exact intent
B1
Intermediate
- Can understand and speak on main points of work/school daily life & travel
- Hesitant response due to lack of vocabulary
- Pronunciation heavy with native language accent
- Writes mostly in present time
B2
High Intermediate
- Can interact well with native speakers
- Can understand complex text; discuss pros and cons
- May be consistent with use of past, present and future
C1 - C2
Advanced
- Clear fluency
- Can write with clarity and structure on varied complex topics
- Can use language creatively
